Frequently asked questions

The questions that come up most.

Nothing plays when a player kills

In order:

  1. Is the victim allowed? effects.all-mobs is false by default, so only PLAYER, MANNEQUIN and ZOMBIE count.
  2. Is there an effect at all? In mode: weapon the menu choice is never read, and in mode: player a bound weapon is never read.
  3. Do they own it? A menu choice they no longer have the node for is taken off instead of played.
  4. Is anyone set to see it? A player on NONE sees nothing, including their own.

The menu says it is off

behaviour.mode is weapon. On that server the menu would change nothing, so it refuses to open rather than pretending.

An effect I bound to a weapon vanished

The weapon carries an id. If the key in effects.yml was renamed, that id names nothing any more and the effect does not play. Renaming a key is not free: it is also a different permission node.

A player says their effect disappeared

Their permission for it went away — a rank expiring, usually. A choice that can no longer be justified is taken off rather than played. The node comes back, they pick it again.

Does losing a permission break a weapon?

No. A bound weapon plays its effect for whoever holds it: the node is asked for when the token is bound, not on every kill. That is what makes a bound weapon worth trading.

Can players see each other's effects?

That is each observer's own choice: ALL, NONE, SELF_ONLY or OTHERS_ONLY, set with /killeffect visibility or from the menu.

Are the bodies real entities?

No. [RAGDOLL] and [NPC] draw displays: nothing can hit them, loot them or collide with them, and they disappear when their life runs out.

Why is the body black, or made of blocks?

ExyliaLib has no MineSkin key. Without one, a [RAGDOLL] body keeps the player's real face on its head, but every other part is drawn in blocks of the nearest colour to that part of the skin. Set mineskin-key in ExyliaLib's plugins/ExyliaLib/config.yml to a free key from account.mineskin.org/keys and run /exylialib reload: each new skin is then uploaded once and kept in ExyliaKillEffect's database. The free plan's limits and ragdoll-skin-quality are in Displays and NPCs.

Does the weapon lore get written to the item?

Never. It is added to the copy that leaves the server. Any plugin reading that weapon finds the lore it always had, and renaming an effect updates every weapon on the server at once.

Can I write my own effects?

Yes — that is what effects.yml is for. Twenty-five shapes, PIXELS for pictures and words, thirteen other tokens and the display parameters are in Sequences. A line that cannot be read is reported on the console and skipped; the rest of the effect still plays.

Effects lag during big fights

Displays are animated by the client, so they are cheap to move — but every line is still a packet per viewer. Look at how many lines an effect has and at count: on any particle lines. ticks: spreads a shape over frames instead of sending it all at once.

Can a region turn effects off?

Yes. ExyliaLib registers a WorldGuard flag, kill-effects: denying it in a region stops effects playing where somebody died inside it. On a server without WorldGuard the flag simply allows.

Does it work on Folia?

Yes, it declares Folia support.

Where do I get support?

On the Exylia Discord.
