Graves

Graves

What happens on death, where the head goes, collecting, protection, previews, experience, item rules, expiry, limits by rank, notices and the compass after respawning.

When a death makes a grave

A grave is made when a player dies and every one of these holds:

  • they have exyliagraves.use (everybody by default);
  • the world does not keep inventories, and no plugin kept it for this death;
  • the world is not in graves.disabled-worlds (names, any case);
  • no other plugin owns the death: a player held in an arena through ExyliaLib sessions, or a duel that claimed its drops (ExyliaSurvivalCore's duel rooms do), gets no grave — those drops are that plugin's;
  • there is something to keep: at least one item, or some experience.

Otherwise the drops fall exactly as they would without the plugin.

The drops are taken out of the death at HIGH, one step before HIGHEST, where death plugins usually scatter what is left: by then there is nothing of the grave's left to scatter. The grave itself is only stored at MONITOR, once the event has settled, from what really left the player. A plugin that cancels the death later, keeps the inventory, keeps the level, or keeps an item through the death's keep list is respected: none of that goes into the grave too.

Where the head goes

SituationWhere
The player died in a block a head can replaceThat block.
They died inside something elseThe first such block above, up to six blocks up.
They fell into the voidThe highest block of that column, one above.
No room at allNo grave: the drops fall as they would have.

A head can replace air, water, lava, short and tall grass, ferns, snow, seagrass and dead bushes. That means a death in a lake or a lava pool leaves the grave in the water or lava, not above it. A block that already holds a grave, or that another Exylia plugin has claimed through ExyliaLib, is never used.

When the grave goes, what it replaced is put back: a water or lava source stays a source, seagrass becomes water, anything else becomes air. Flowing liquid never becomes a new source.

The head is skinned with the owner's face. Above it floats the hologram, three lines by default — whose grave, how many stacks and the countdown, and who may open it — refreshed every second. Both are only a picture of the database row: they are drawn when the chunk loads and the text is dropped when it unloads.

Somebody built over a grave

If a block other than a head now stands where a grave's head was (WorldEdit, a reset, a crash), the block is left alone and the grave shows as text only. Clicking that block still collects the grave.

Nothing breaks a grave

The head cannot be mined: breaking it is cancelled with "Click the grave to collect it; it cannot be broken." Explosions skip it, withers, endermen and falling blocks cannot change it, fire does not burn it, flowing water or lava does not wash it away, and a piston that would move it does not fire.

Collecting

A click on the head — left or right, main hand — collects it. There is no window onto a grave's real contents: the click deletes the row, and if that delete is the one that removed it, everything is handed over:

  • items go into the collector's inventory;
  • when the owner collects it themselves and collect.auto-equip is on, armour and the offhand item go straight back on, into empty slots only;
  • the experience is given with the items;
  • what does not fit is kept in ExyliaLib's reward store and handed over on the player's next join, on any server of the network, with "N item(s) from your graves were handed to you."

Everything goes by player id, so a player who dies, quits or switches servers between the click and the delivery still gets it all, once.

The owner reads "Grave collected: N item(s) and N experience."; anybody else reads that they looted the grave, and the owner is sent a notice (see Notices).

If the database cannot be reached at that moment, the grave stays standing and the player reads "The grave could not be opened right now. It is still there; try again in a moment.". If somebody else got it first, "That grave is gone."

Protection

graves.protection-timeWho may open it
15 (default)The owner, and for those 15 minutes nobody else. After that, anybody.
0Anybody from the start.
-1Only ever the owner.

During a timed protection the player who made the kill is let in too while graves.killer-can-loot is true (the default). A grave protected for good lets nobody but the owner in, killer or not. Staff with exyliagraves.bypass.protection open any grave.

A player who may not open it is told whose grave it is and how long until it opens to everybody, or that only the owner ever can. The hologram's third line and the menus show the same state: "Only the owner can open it", "Anybody can open it", or "Protected » 12m 3s".

Looking inside

With exyliagraves.preview (everybody by default) a player can look at what a grave holds without taking anything:

  • sneak-click the head, while collect.sneak-to-preview is on (the default);
  • right-click a grave in /graves.

Only graves they may open: someone else's protected grave answers "You cannot look inside that grave." Staff with exyliagraves.admin.view look inside any. Sneak-clicking without the preview permission simply collects.

The preview is a copy. Every click and drag is cancelled while it is open, the player's own inventory included, so not even a shift-click or a double-click moves an item; the grave's row is still the only place its items are.

Experience

contents.experienceWhat the grave keeps
NONENothing. The orbs drop as they would without graves.
VANILLA (default)What vanilla would have dropped as orbs, at most 100 points.
ALLEvery point the player had, levels included. They respawn at level 0.

contents.experience-percent (default 100) is the share of that the grave keeps, 0 to 100; the rest is lost. At 0 nothing is kept and the orbs drop as usual. A world or plugin that keeps the level puts nothing in the grave.

Item rules

KeyWhat it does
contents.ignored-materialsMaterials that never go into a grave: they drop on the floor as usual.
contents.kept-materialsMaterials the player keeps through death, in their inventory.

Both take Bukkit material names, such as TOTEM_OF_UNDYING or COMPASS. A name that is not a material is skipped. They only apply to deaths that would make a grave: in a disabled world, or without exyliagraves.use, a kept material drops like anything else.

Expiry

graves.expire-time (default 60 minutes) is how long a grave stands. -1 keeps it until it is collected. A rank can be given longer with exyliagraves.expire.<minutes>: the largest number a player holds wins, and a number below the configured time is ignored. With -1 configured, graves never expire whatever the permissions say; 0 also never expires, but there an exyliagraves.expire.<minutes> node still gives its holder a timed grave.

Expired graves are swept once a second. What happens to the contents is graves.on-expire:

ValueWhat happens
DROP (default)Items and experience drop where the grave stood. An unloaded chunk is loaded in the background first.
DELETEThey are gone. The audit log keeps a summary of what the grave held.

Anything other than DELETE drops. A grave whose world is no longer loaded on this server has no floor to drop on, so its contents are handed to the owner instead.

An expiry goes through the same delete as a click, so a grave being collected at that exact moment is not also dropped. A delete that fails leaves the grave standing and is tried again a minute later.

Limits

graves.max-per-player (default 5) is how many graves one player may have standing on this server. Dying with that many tips the oldest one out where it stands — its contents drop, whatever on-expire says — and the owner is told it expired. -1 (or 0) is no limit.

exyliagraves.limit.<n> raises it for a rank: the largest number wins, and a number below the configured limit is ignored. With -1 configured there is no limit for anybody; with 0, a limit node still gives its holder one.

Graves still being written, or being taken at that moment, are not counted.

Notices

The owner is told when something happens to a grave while they are not looking:

EventMessage
Somebody looted it"Steve looted your grave in world: 12 item(s)."
It expired and dropped"One of your graves expired and its 12 item(s) are on the ground where it stood."
It expired and was deleted"One of your graves expired and its 12 item(s) are gone."

These are ExyliaLib notices: shown at once when the owner is on this server, on the server they are on when Redis is configured, and otherwise on their next join.

Back on their feet

After respawning, when the player has a grave standing on this server:

  • respawn.point-compass (default true) points their compass at their newest grave, when it is in the world they respawned in;
  • respawn.remind (default true) says where it is: "Your grave is at x, y, z (world). Your compass points to it."

Audit log

Every grave created, collected, looted, expired, deleted on expiry, handed back or removed is recorded in ExyliaLib's audit log, under the actions grave-create, grave-collect, grave-loot, grave-expire, grave-delete, grave-restore and grave-remove. See Staff tools.
