The killcam
Which deaths get a killcam, what is recorded, every step of the shot, the summary, watching again and the skip button.
Which deaths get one
A death is kept for a killcam when every one of these holds:
- the victim has
exyliakillcam.use(everybody by default); - a player killed them: the one the server credits with the kill, so a bow shot or a tamed wolf counts
— or a mob, when
deaths.mobsis on; - it was not their own doing (a player is never their own killer);
- the world is not in
deaths.disabled-worlds(names, any case); - no other plugin is in charge of them, while
deaths.skip-held-playersis on — see Compatibility; - they are not watching a killcam already;
- no plugin cancelled the death.
The killer's figures are read at that moment: their name (a mob's custom name, or its type such as Zombie), the hearts they had left, the item in their main hand and the distance between the two.
What is recorded
ExyliaKillCam does not start recording when somebody dies; it is always recording. ExyliaLib's black box keeps the last stretch of everything around every player in memory, and on the death the seconds before it are cut out. What a capture holds:
- everything within
recording.radiusblocks (24 by default) of anywhere the victim was during those seconds — a chase, a pearl, an elytra flight: whoever and whatever was near them is in it; - the ground as it was when the fight started, including blocks placed and broken since;
killcam.seconds-beforeseconds (plus one) before the death, and two after it, for the fall and the puff;- never a player in vanish, while
recording.hide-vanishedis on.
The bodies, the arrows and the blocks are what the server saw and decided. The killcam shows the server's answer, which is not always what a player's client showed them at the time — see the FAQ.
A player the box has no frames of (they had just joined, or the server just started) gets no killcam, and nothing is said.
After the respawn
What happens next is the player's mode:
| Mode | After the respawn |
|---|---|
AUTO | The killcam starts by itself. With killcam.auto-respawn on, the death screen is skipped too. |
ASK | A line in chat says who killed them, with a clickable [▶ WATCH KILLCAM]. |
OFF | Nothing. /killcam still shows the death. |
The killcam starts or is offered once, on the respawn that follows the death, and only when that respawn
comes within a minute of it. Somebody who waits longer on the death screen gets nothing by itself, but can
still type /killcam.
The shot
Staged
The recording and its ground are laid down on ExyliaLib's temporary world, a plot of its own, while the player is still where they respawned. Only once it is ready is the player moved there; a killcam that cannot be shown never takes anybody anywhere. Any open inventory is closed first.
The title
KILLCAM, Killed by the killer. While it plays, the line above the hotbar shows the killer, a progress bar and the time out of the clip's length, and the hotbar holds the SKIP button. The viewer cannot be hurt, flies, and sees every body as it moved.
Through the killer's eyes
With killcam.first-person on, the camera is the killer's own view from the first frame. When it is
off, or the killer is not in the recording, the clip is watched from behind the victim.
Slow motion
The last killcam.slow-motion-seconds before the death play at killcam.slow-motion-speed (0.35×
by default). Bodies still move every tick, so slow motion is smooth, not choppy.
The cut
On the death the clip returns to real time, the camera leaves the killer's eyes and cuts to 3.5 blocks from the body, on the killer's side and a little above it, looking down at it. The body falls, turns red and disappears in a puff, as it does in the game.
The kill effect
With ExyliaKillEffect 1.9.0 or newer and kill-effects.replay on, the effect the killer's kill played
on the victim is drawn again at the body, for the viewer alone. See
Compatibility.
Back
After killcam.hold-seconds (3 by default) on the body, the viewer is put back exactly as they were
before it started, where they respawned. Then comes the summary.
The summary
Sent when a killcam ends, however it ended — at the end, skipped, or taken over by another plugin:
| Line | Shows |
|---|---|
| Killed by | The killer's name, or the mob's. |
| Health left | The hearts the killer had at the moment of the kill, with one decimal. |
| Weapon | The name of the item in the killer's main hand as players see it, or Fists when it was empty. |
| Distance | How far apart the two were, in blocks. |
| [▶ WATCH AGAIN] | Runs /killcam. |
The lines are summary in messages.yml; Fists is fists.
Watching again
/killcam plays the player's last death again, from the start, as long as it is younger than
killcam.rewatch-minutes (5 by default). Only the last one is kept: a new death replaces it, and leaving
the server drops it.
| Refusal | When |
|---|---|
| You have no recent death to watch. | No death kept, or older than rewatch-minutes. |
| Killcams cannot be shown on this server. | PacketEvents is not installed. |
| You cannot watch a killcam right now. | They are dead, already watching, or another plugin holds them (a duel, an event, a queue). |
| The killcam could not be shown. | Staging or opening it failed; the reason goes to the console. |
A killcam started by itself in AUTO that fails for one of these reasons says nothing: the player simply
stays where they respawned.
Skipping
Three ways out, all to the same place — back as they were, with the summary:
- the SKIP button on the hotbar;
/killcam skip;- another plugin taking the player over (a duel starting, a queue moving them), which ends the killcam first.
Skipping while the killcam is still loading cancels it before the player is moved. /killcam skip when
not watching does nothing.
The skip button
The button lives in lang/<code>/hotbar.yml. It is drawn on the client by ExyliaLib's overlays and never
put in the inventory: the viewer's own items stay underneath, untouched, and come back when the killcam
ends.
lock: FULL
pickup: false
hide_rest: true
items:
skip:
slot: 4
material: BARRIER
name: '{error}&lSKIP'
lore:
- ''
- '{secondary}Information:'
- ' {letters_black}▎ {letters}Leave the killcam and go back'
- ' {letters_black}▎ {letters}to where you were.'
- ''
- '{warning}➥ Click to skip'
- ''
actions:
- 'exyliakillcam:skip'lock: FULL freezes the whole inventory, pickup: false refuses picking items up, and hide_rest: true
shows every other slot empty. Slots 0-8 are the hotbar. The keys are ExyliaLib's; the full reference is
on the library's overlays page. The action exyliakillcam:skip is what the
button runs, and can be put on more items.
If the file is missing or broken the console says so and no button is shown; /killcam skip still works.
